March 16: Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary Tour:
10am to 2pm - Come join us for volunteer work at Kindred Spirits Sanctuary in addition to a tour and lunch on Saturday. Everything we need is provided for the work party (rakes, gloves, etc.) but feel free to bring anything that will make your time there more comfortable. Wear closed toe shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather and for working at the sanctuary. The work party begins promptly at 10 a.m. with a tour of the farm for new volunteers. This will allow you to meet the animals and become familiar with the layout of the sanctuary as well as potential safety considerations. It will also allow time for KSS staff to find out more about your expectations and preferences in relation to your work. The tour is followed by some of the sanctuary's big farm "projects" (raking, mucking, hay clean-up, cleaning barns, limb/brush clean-up, etc.) and the day winds down with a vegan lunch, which is provided. Work parties are limited to 15 participants. If you would like, you may bring produce to feed the animals during our tour. This is not required but lots of fun to do. They love carrots, apples and other raw produce.Horse and dog treats are great, too! *Children are always welcome at the sanctuary when accompanied by a parent or guardian but due to the intense nature of some of the physica l work completed during the work parties, the sanctuary finds that scheduling a tour separately works better for very young children. If you have a youngster who would like to participate with the work party, 10 years of age is the youngest permitted. March 23: Free showing of award-winning film, Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home:
3pm - You won't want to miss this award-winning film which is being shown by Florida Voices for Animals at no cost at the public library. Viewers' comments across the globe have been overwhelmingly positive after viewing this film. A riveting story of transformation and healing, Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home explores the awakening conscience of several people who grew up in traditional farming culture and who have now come to question the basic assumptions of their way of life. Presented through a woven tapestry of memories, music, and breathtaking accounts of life-altering moments, the film provides insight into the farmers' sometimes amazing connections with the animals under their care, while also making clear the complex web of social, psychological and economic forces that have led them to their present dilemma. Interwoven with the farmers' stories is the dramatic animal rescue work of a newly-trained humane police officer whose sense of justice puts her at odds with the law she is charged to uphold. With strikingly honest interviews and rare footage demonstrating the emotional lives and intense family bonds of animals most often viewed as living commodities, this groundbreaking documentary shatters stereotypical notions of farmers, farm life, and perhaps most surprisingly, farm animals themselves. Duration: 1hr 18 minutes. To view the trailer and to learn more about the film, the awards it has won and the subjects of the film click here.
